John Beswick and Neil Roberts retained the Cyriax Cup trophy for Rugby Fives
doubles at Alleyn's School, defeating Hamish Buchanan and Robin Perry in a two-game
final. Buchanan and Perry , in their first National Doubles final, were hit
off the court in game one but came back strongly to press their opponents all
the way in the second game, which Beswick and Roberts won 15-13 after a titanic
struggle. This was the first Cyriax Cup final since 1980 not to feature the
classic pair of Ian Fuller and Dave Hebden, who have been either winners or
runners-up in this competition for the past 21 years.

Oxford triumph in BUSA Championships
Oxford predictably dominated this year's BUSA Rugby Fives Championships at Sherbome.
James Toop, Oxford's captain for both fives codes -Rugby and Eton -won all his
games by a wide margin to take his first Rugby Fives title. Toop and his partner
Marcus Bate were pushed hard in some of their doubles matches, but they eventually
came through to win the final in straight games against Oxford's second pair,
Ed Brooke and Ben Brookes.

Claire Knowles returned to the Ladies' Rugby Fives Championships
an even stronger player than she was last year.
The field was smaller than expected, so pools
and round robins were employed to maximise the
playing time for everyone. Competitors had, after
all, come from Manchester, Nottingham, Devon and
Geneva!
The doubles matches were perhaps the most enjoyable. Paula Smith
and Denise HallWilton had the closest match against
Nicky Hardie and Emma Seton, but Claire, who was
most ably supported by Melanie Whitehead, lost
only one point in four games.
All games were fought valiantly and in friendly competition, but
Claire was in a class of her own. She was a pleasure
to watch -from off court at least! -and her graceful
style and magnificent striking of the ball seemed
effortless. Can we have some more ladies from
the YM in Manchester, please?

Yorkshire-man Neil Roberts won his second National Singles title in the Jesters'
Cup final at St Paul's School, defeating the holder Hamish Buchanan in a two-game
final. Both men approached the game in similar fashion, hitting hard and low
into the back corners of the court, and on the day it was Roberts who found
a more telling length, keeping his opponent on the back foot and eventually
forcing him into error.
