Giles Corner (St Paul's) won the Open Singles title to confirm his status as top seed in the National Schools Rugby Fives Championships at St Paul's School. His opponent in the final, James Toop (St Olave's), is a triple Eton Fives Schools winner and the first Eton Fives champion to appear in a Rugby Fives Schools event. His achievement in reaching the final was remarkable in itself, but he also managed to give Corner, last year's runner-up, a good battle in the final before going down by two games to love. Corner and his partner Matthew Kent won the Open Doubles title with something to spare over the St Paul's second pair. In fact, St Paul's won five of the six titles at this year's championships, reflecting their current domination of the game at schools level.

Final: Fuller & Hebden bt Buchanan & Perry 15-7 15-10. Plate winners: Hughes & Rew.

Blessed by good weather and nicely refurbished courts at Winchester, this was an enjoyable although lengthy day's play. Only half as many pairs entered as last year at Bradfield, but Parkinson's Law ensured that play took up the same amount of time, for there were some marathon matches in the bottom half of the draw and games were played to 15 points instead of to 11.

In the early rounds, the school pairs from Winchester, Blundell's and St Paul's all played very respectable fives, especially the top pair from St Paul's, Giles Corner and Matthew Kent, who gave the second-seeded Hamish Buchanan and Robin Perry a fright in the first game of their second round match. Meanwhile, Eton Fives players Howard and Matthew Wiseman utterly bamboozled Simon Swales and Trevor Ingle with some unorthodox tactics and then went on to prove their quality by defeating the number 7 seeds, Jim Hughes and Alex Rew, in round 2.

Johnny Armitage and Joe Gribble played well this year to defeat locals Bill Gunyon and Richard Summerfield in two close games, but then spent too much time on their knees to impress top seeds Ian Fuller and Dave Hebden. Bristol University pair Tom Maconie and Richard Billington looked in good practice in beating Graham Beauchamp and Neil Amott, but found former champions Simon Constantine and Robbie Barr too experienced for them in the quarter-finals. The Wiseman brothers volleyed and retrieved bravely in their quarter- final against the formidable hitting of Buchanan and Perry, winning admiration from the gallery but eventually losing the match. The other quarter-final produced a shock, as Nick Austin and his bouncy partner Robin Nagy came back after losing the first game to third seeds, Jeremy Schroeter and Alex Wilson, to win the match in fine style.

The first semi-final was over quite quickly. Fuller and Hebden defeating Constantine and Barr with the loss of only 6 points, but the second semi was an absolute epic. Buchanan and Perry won the first game easily, but Austin and Nagy, playing as well as I have seen them, rallied superbly to win the second by a narrow margin. The third was another thriller, no more than three points separating the sides at any stage, but in the end Buchanan and Perry squeaked home

The length and quality of this match must have taken its toll, but the second seeds held their own in the early stages of the final. From 7-6, however, Fuller and Hebden won six consecutive rallies in typical style to move to 13-6, and the first game was soon over. In the second game, the top seeds applied more pressure to get from 3-2 to 8-2 in one hand, but Buchanan and Perry immediately turned things round, rapidly progressing to 10-8 up. That was as far as they were to get, however, as their opponents characteristically lifted their game again to win the necessary 7 points without reply.

This victory represents a grand slam for Ian Fuller and Dave Hebden, for they have now won the "Bridge" in successive years in all four venues: Sedbergh, Malvern, Bradfield and Winchester. This has not been done before, although Roger Layton and Mike Tremellen have come close with three successive wins. My congratulations to Ian and Dave on this fine achievement.

The plate was won for the second year running by Jim Hughes and Alex Rew, beating fellow West Countrymen Chris Thomas and Jonathan Down in the final. The competition as a whole contained some really close games - two 16-15s, a 16-14, a 15-13 and two 15-12s - so a lot of fun was had here as well.

I am grateful to James Hodgins, the new master-in-charge at Winchester, for his help with the championships. He kindly liaised with the PE Centre over changing facilities and made sure that the courts were in top condition for the event. I have not seen them in such smart order since the 1950s!

Next year the circus moves on to Sedbergh, another wonderful place for a healthy weekend.

David Barnes.

THE NATIONAL SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIPS (THE JESTERS' CUP)

The fives world is definitely not a Club 18-30 resort. Indeed, anyone in this age range will struggle to keep up with the pacesetting oldies, if this year's National Singles is anything to go by.

For the second year running three of the semi-finalists were in their thirties or forties, and the final was again contested by two men with an average age of 41.

The tournament didn't feature many surprises. In the opening round, of the eight seeds only Dave Fox came unstuck in a patchy showing against the excellent Matt Cavanagh, who produced a very disciplined performance to make his third consecutive quarter-final of the season.

Elsewhere the seedings proved remarkably efficient. Honourable mentions go to Alex Wilson, who pushed Ian Purvis to three games in a match between the eighth and ninth ranked players, and Jeremy Schroeter, who opened with an amazing early salvo to take a 10-1 lead against former champion Neil Roberts before the natural order reasserted itself.

The quarterfinals saw the top two seeds relatively untroubled as Ian Fuller waltzed past a tired Ian Purvis, while Roberts defeated Cavanagh, whose honest endeavour couldn't keep up with the sheer pace of his opponent.

Meanwhile there was a close encounter between partners Buchanan and Hanton, with Bruce fighting back from 1-13 down in the opening game to have four game-balls. Hamish held on, and then stood firm in the following game to run out a 16-15, 15-11 winner.

As expected, the longest game of the round was the match between Paddy d'Ancona and John Beswick. At 12-7 up in the first game, John was playing confidently and hitting a good length, but a determined fight-back saw Paddy take the first game 16-14. John came back strongly to take the second 15-11, but fatigue caught up with him and Paddy took the decider relatively straightforwardly, 15-6.

The semis were again pretty simple for the old hands, as Fuller swiftly dispatched a weary d'Ancona and Roberts, despite some extremely good resistance from Buchanan, came through for yet another final.

Ian faced a real onslaught as Neil hit the ball with pace and precision in the opening rallies of the final. Despite this powerful start, Ian gradually came back into the game after being 0-4 down. Neil was continuing to pressurise Ian, but the reigning champion was beginning to move his opponent around the court. Eventually Ian's studied geometry paid off and he took the first game, 15-8. In the second, he seemed to move up a gear, keeping the ball low and to a length, forcing Neil into risks and errors. A twelve-month extension to his reign was confirmed with a 15-4 win.

In the plate competition Robin Nagy and Dave Fox each had three victories after a round robin of five players, and Dave was victorious in the play-off.

BUSA Rugby Fives

lan Purvis (Liverpool Hope) has equalled the Universities' record by winning his fourth consecutive BUSA singles title, beating Tim Stock , the Oxford captain, in the final at Bristol. In the semi-finals. Stock had won the longest match in the history of the Championships against Duncan Bailey of Manchester - a battle which lasted two and a half hours - but he was unable to match the power and skill of Purvis in the final. The Doubles competition was dominated by Oxford, with Stock and his partner Ed Brooke defeating their second pair, Paddy Lord and Marcus Bate, in the final.

WEST OF ENGLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS

The only good thing to say about the Saturday of this year’s tournament was that there was no wind to blow the torrential rain into the courts, and somewhat to everybody’s surprise we managed to play the singles tournament without any delays.

In the singles, two early round matches nearly produced upsets. Watson had match point in the second game against Hanton, the third seed, but was not able to get that final point and then succumbed easily in the third game. In another match between the seventh seed Austin and Bayley, Austin scraped home in a tense third game 11-9. In the latter stages the competition ran with the seeds to produce a repeat of last years final between the top seeds, Fuller and Roberts.

In the final both players started somewhat tentatively playing to the back of the court.

Roberts built up a 4-0 lead, but then Fuller started playing some of his punishing cross court shots which understandably began to drain Roberts. Having taken the first game, Fuller always looked in control, and took the second game relatively easily to win the tournament for the third year running.

In the singles plate the semi final between Hughes and Stock produced an exceptional game with a wide range of shots being played by both players. In the end Hughes won 16-14, but was unable to raise his game again for the final which he lost to Rew 15-6.

The main features of the early rounds of the doubles was an excellent and enjoyable match between Bishop and Austin and Wilson and Schroeter, with Austin hitting the ball extremely hard, and Schroeter volleying at will, as only he can. Despite facing a match point against them, Bishop and Wilson ended up easy winners in the third game.

As in the singles, it was only the seeds that dominated the latter rounds with the top two seeds reaching the final. In the final Roberts and Beswick started strongly and built up a 9-2 lead in the first game, but Fuller and Hebden steadied their game and clawed their way back, and once they had secured the first game there was never any real doubt that they would retain the doubles trophy.
